Biography
Dr. Christopher R. Nesmith is a nationally recognized superintendent, researcher, and systems designer focused on transforming Career and Technical Education (CTE) into coherent, trust-driven pathways that connect students to real opportunity. As Superintendent of Elma School District in Washington State, he has led one of the most innovative mastery-based learning and career pathway systems in the country—earning national recognition for building aligned, employer-connected programs that bridge high school, postsecondary education, and the workforce.
Dr. Nesmith’s work sits at the intersection of research and practice. His doctoral research on trust in inter-organizational partnerships has become the foundation for his approach to designing sustainable youth apprenticeship systems, emphasizing benevolence, competence, and integrity as the drivers of long-term success. He previously led Washington’s first fully integrated youth apprenticeship program in advanced manufacturing, aligning high school credit, college dual credit, and industry certification into a single coherent pathway.
He is the author of an upcoming Solution Tree book on building high-quality, trust-based CTE systems, providing a practical, field-tested framework for aligning schools, employers, and communities around shared outcomes. A co-lead of AASA’s Redefining Ready initiative, Dr. Nesmith works with systems across the country to move beyond fragmented, compliance-driven models toward integrated, student-centered ecosystems.
